We live in an amazing community.
Yesterday at about 1:30 pm a man and his fiancé were driving through Memorial Park when they saw something out in the lake. They got closer and realized a dog had fallen into the water and was hanging onto the edge of the ice. They immediately stopped and went out to help. At first, the dog seemed to have stopped struggling, almost as though he had given up.
They called dispatch, who sent police and the fire department. Fearing the dog might not last much longer, he made his way out onto the ice, while encouraging the dog to come over to him. He cautiously inched his way out towards the thin ice and continued cheering him on. This excited, and motivated the dog, who struggled as hard as he could and finally got out of the water. He ran over to the relieved man, who embraced him and then dried him off with his sweatshirt.
The lucky dog got a ride in their warm car, while snuggling with the man’s fiancé. They already have two dogs, so they gave him a ride to the animal shelter, where the caring staff will make sure he gets a good home.
When hearing the story, one can’t help but think of a couple life lessons. First…stay off thin ice. Second, showing you care, and cheering them on, can sometimes be enough motivation for someone to help themselves out of a bad situation.
Stefan Giersdorf and Karlie Hennen are the ones who rescued this dog. They recently moved to Sparta, and we are proud to have them as part of our community.
