Install Xbmc On Dune Hd
Hi, Can I use/install Xbmc on Dune HD 101 streamer? I got 4 of those in my big house (all taking data from a central NEtwork HardDrive I have) but it comes with a lousy GUI and I wish to use better UI like Xbmc. Many thanks for any help, My wife wants to kill me since we spent all this money but still he have. It’s like a mini website for Dune Player For example, if Plex can generate all needed files with a script and create a folder called PlexDune You only need to make a shortcut to this folder on each Dune Player in your house, and you will see all your movies and TV shows As you know Dune HD can read.MKV,.ISO ( DVD and Bluray ).

Probably not until late 2012 (being optimistic) . The current chips on the Dunes can't handle XBMC.

XBMC requires a 3D enabled GPU... current Sigma Chipsets in DUNES does not have this hardware requirement...
The Sigma 8910 has it and various ARM processors...

Also Dune would have to agree to using Sigma Designs port of XBMC.
They may choose not too or have it run XBMC as an app or run XBMC out of the box with a Dune custom UI/skin.

Better to just get a cheap nettop and install OpenElec.
Even if/when we see Sigma players with XBMC it will probably be buggy as hell. Honestly the more I think about it, the more it seems like a dumb idea, XBMC is bloated as hell.

XBMC runs fine on my Mac Minis, an old ATV1 with CHD and as you noted on an inexpensive netted. There's no shortage of system that it can run on.
Plex runs on iPods, LG and Samsung TV's, Macs, ...
I must agree with you regarding OpenElec. The latest version is very fast and compact.
I don't quite see the point of buying an expensive Dune, PCH, ... just to run XBMC.

Doesn't the XBOX 360 cost less than a Dune? Get an XBOX 360 for XBMC...

I don't think you can install XBMC on the Xbox 360. I would love to be wrong though.
Just because I don't care, doesn't mean I don't understand.

Yeah, to my knowledge you can't run this on the 360. And to run it on an original xbox you need to mod it. Plus, the version that runs on the old xbox doesn't have a lot of the features of builds from the past few years. Not really an option.

XBMC has had a lot of optimization with it's move to Arm platforms. You wouldn't notice it running on a PC but on an Arm box the difference has been amazing.
Most people don't want HTPC's which are a niche item and will remain so, having to install software, use remote's not designed for XBMC, lacking the ability to turn on/off the device with a remote and so on.
Network media players that run XBMC are not too far off (MIPS or Arm) and I'm certain will become the dominant XBMC platforms very quickly.
Lastly Xbox 360 does not run XBMC (not sure how that info that it does still gets passed around), the XBMC developers have basically said never going to happen. Also the original Xbox is no longer supported by modern XBMC so the only versions for the Xbox are old builds.

HTPC's are hardly a niche segment, especially with nettops and the Mac Mini. The remote that comes with a Mac Mini works out of the box with XBMC. Couple that with Remote Buddy and you have a very powerful system.
Media players are not without their problems. Most are just Linux htpc's in disguise. They keep trying to add more features such as browsers and premium content. In doing this they become increasingly complex. My Mini is actually just as simple to run as any of my media players, most of which are junk.

Not a patch, just a custom firmware based on the oppo firmware I am guessing. ISO playback from my NAS is a wonderful thing. MY Dune (which could not even play 3D ISO) has been retired in favor of the Oppo! Sponsored Links | |

I have been a very strong supporter and user of the Dune Players since they came out. I was one of the original beta testers for their IP interface. I have a Dune Base 3.0, and two (2) Dune Max players. One of the Dune Max players is NFG and the problem (I am pretty sure) is a bad power supply board (I am an electronics engineer with extensive experience in hardware and software). It will not power up and when the board is tested it does not have the correct output voltages.
I have been unable to get Dune HDI in the USA to either send me the part (power supply board) or tell me where to send the unit for repair. I know Mike Truppi personally and he has been very helpful in the past but I am getting no traction on this issue.
If any one has a NFG Dune Max that powers up they are willing to sell please contact me. I may want to buy it just to get the Power Supply board. I do not have the equipment to repair SM technology PC boards, nor do I have a schematic or parts list for the board.
I am starting to look at the Mede8er as a replacement player and have requested access to their NetApi board which should have the info I will need. Any other suggestions on a replacement player that can be fully controlled over IP and play mkv formatted files would be appreciated.
It is unfortunate that the service/support of Dune players has gotten as bad as it is, the units I own have met all my needs when operational. They render mkv files perfectly with the latest codecs. I do not use 3D.

A local electronic/TV repair shop should be able to repair that PSU for $ 30.00 or so. I had a mine repaired by a local shop that repairs TVs. I am an EE also but did not have the time to do it. That really sucks man. I too have been a longtime Dune owner and supporter. I have finally gotten a dedicated theater room with hdmi 1.4 components, so I have also been thinking about looking elsewhere because of the lack of support(fw).

Do you know if the Dune Base 3.0 and the Dune Max use the same board?
I found a local electronics repair shop that does component level repairs. They have the unit and will tell if they can fix it and what the cost will. They fix all types of electronics, PCs, TVS, iPads, iPhones, etc. interesting policy. Estimate is free. If they can't fix it there is no charge.

I just looked at the schematic and I don't think the boards are the same. In the Dune Max there is a main PSU that puts out a single DC voltage that feeds a board that develops all the needed voltages. The schematic you sent me seems to do it all on a single assembly.

I have had the HD Max for 2 years and for the past few weeks it has started to make a whirring noise where the bd player is. What gives? Even when not using the BD itself, it is making the noise...The only way to make it stop is to physically shut it off by the power switch in the back...then after a couple of days the noise comes back even when the player is in stand-by.
Any thoughts, suggestions, help!!

I sold all of my media players Mede8er and Dune included. Built my own HTPC and now use Kodi and Plex to stream wireless in and out of network. The HTPC has changed completely. I built it, installed all of the software, and I haven't need to do anything to it since. Well, I had to install Kodi Beta 3 that downmixes Atmos to TrueHD.
So, I agree Dune is done, and all of the dedicated media player will die off slowly. Now with TV's being capable of using Plex it's even better.

I've actually gone the other route. Went from media players to XBMC back to media players for three reasons. So, I agree Dune is done, and all of the dedicated media player will die off slowly. Now with TV's being capable of using Plex it's even better.
Xbmc On Dune Hd Smart
1) The media players are just more stable than the HTPC I have sitting here. Mediabrowser would constantly crash, and XBMC/Kodi just seemed to require constant supervision.2) The WAF is much higher with Zappiti Dynamic for our BR collection, and a Roku for everything else.
3) Video output on the Dune is more accurate than the HTPC I have with the Nvidia card.
I'm looking forward to the new Zappiti player. I'm curious to see what the Zappiti guys have in store for v4.

Weird. I've found the opposite with my HTPC. I don't have a sound card, I use the GPU from my A6 CPU. Picture quality is the same or better, and sound it just night and day better. I use my HTPC for everything. I can watch all of my movies, tv shows, NFL, MLB, ETC with one box. I don't like MediaBrowser, JRiver or WMC. I use strictly Kodi, and to stream wireless in and out of network I use Plex.1) The media players are just more stable than the HTPC I have sitting here. My wife and kids love the HTPC because they can go to Youtube and watch whatever video they want with surround sound. Music sounds better as well. HTPC now are more reliable and easier to maintain. Hell, I haven't touch anything since I've built it. The only thing I had to do was install Kodi beta3 to downmix Atmos to TrueHD.
Roku now made a deal with a TV company so they have the Roku GUI in the TV. Roku knows their hardware will be obsolete soon, and they understand that they need to integrate their software to TV hardware. Like I've said dedicated media players and HTPC will be obsolete. Everything will be integrated via TV hardware.
